 Terence Johnson
Respect for music and an unbridled passion for the art form are what propel Terence Johnson as he takes his production company, Terence Johnson Music, to great heights. With a Master of Arts degree from New York University’s Music Business Program, Terence possesses a strong foundation in the music industry’s practices and principles to complement his musical aptitude. This music producer, composer, and songwriter works tirelessly at making his mark on the music industry, and scoring for film and television productions. Terence fuses jazz, funk, hip-hop, and R&B, to create his unique sound. His influences include great producers such as Quincy Jones, Teddy Riley, Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland, and the Neptunes. What’s more, he finds inspiration from the evolution of popular music and the society that shaped its course: from the field hollers heard in the south before the American Civil War, to the record industry in the early jazz age, to the current digital era.
Music first became a part of Terence’s life as a child growing up in Farrell, Pennsylvania–a steel mill town located in the rust belt of western Pennsylvania. “I would come home from school and trying to catch the after school shows. They would often do things like making guitars out of tissue boxes and rubber bands, or kazoos with combs and wax paper. I would follow along and try to strum out melodies and chords. I Just wanted to make music out of whatever I could–I didn’t have any instruments back then.” Growing up in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Terence was fully immersed in the musical culture of the time. “I remember being glued to the TV growing up, and watching Video Soul and YO! MTV Raps. I would record songs from the TV onto a tape so I could learn the lyrics.” Terence began his classical music training at age 11 playing drums. His experience with marching and concert bands not only provided him with great musical dexterity, but also gave him a desire to perfect his musicianship. Terence has played piano and guitar, taken vocal lessons, and studied jazz history and analysis. He believes that his classical training and knowledge of instrumentation has contributed to his becoming a well-rounded music producer. Terence went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in Communications Media at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Studying communications allowed him to develop skills in many forms of media production including audio, radio, television, graphic design, and game design, as well as business and marketing. Equipped with this unique skill set, Terence has the tools necessary to navigate the rapidly changing–and interdependent–digital age of music and media. Now residing in New York City, Terence plans not only to take the popular music world by storm, but also to usher in a new era of music by creating compositions that resonate with the public in a way that they did for him in the early 90's. Creating the next golden era of music won't be easy, but with the right heart, mind, talent, and determination, Terence certainly makes a strong case to do just that. |
